Évora & Monsaraz

After riding through the countryside for the last couple of days we were excited to be in a city again. Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage site with lots of historical monuments from different time periods. We decided to get a hotel room so that we could ditch the bikes and explore the city freely. After getting my iPhone stolen we had been extra careful about never leaving the bikes and our panniers without keeping an eye on them. We always take turns going into stores or exploring sights. Another advantage about getting a hotel room was that our backs were longing to sleep in a bed again...

Rolling Hills

The last two days were exactly what I imagined this trip to be like. We woke up at the campground in Sebutal and decided that it was time to do some laundry. There weren’t any washers and dryers, but we found some special sinks that were set up for washing clothes. They had rippled wash boards attached. Eric looked at them and announced “Wow, last time I saw one of those was in a history book”. Well, they actually work and with the help of our all-in-one soap-shampoo-toothpaste-detergent liquid we got our clothes clean and smelling minty-fresh. To dry them we just hung them off the ends...

Up, Up, Up – Guincho to Sintra to Sebutal

After a day of rest in Guincho we set off for our next destination Sintra, a hilltop castle town with 8 out of 10 on the charm-o-meter. Side note: Jailbroke and unlocked my iPhone, but since Portugal is not a country where Wal-Mart’s have sprouted up in each town I can’t find a cell phone store to get a data sim card. So we are stuck having to use free wifi which is rather scarce here as well. On our way to the hilltop town we met a fellow bicyclist Pepol (at least that’s what his name sounded like). He was very excited to ride next to us and tell Anja and me about his adventures...

Leaving Lisbon – A Whirlwind of Events

What a day! First we overslept, then my iPhone was stolen, we had to ride our bikes in heavy traffic and we didn’t get to our campsite until midnight. More details below… 4:30am After spending a few hours organizing all our gear and packing up our panniers for the first time we finally go to sleep. We haven’t felt tired a bit due to our jet lag. 11:50am “It’s 11:50!” I wake up with this shout out from Eric. Our jetlag, going to bed late and the fancy curtains in the hotel room had us sleep in. Checkout is at noon, so we jump out of bed and get ready to leave as fast as we can....

First Day Riding Our Bikes

First Day Riding Our Bikes

“Riding your bike will soon feel more natural than walking” Eric told me while I skeptically stared at my new bike that I was going to take on a tour halfway around the world. We arrived in Lisbon the night before and were beyond excited to find out that our bikes had already been delivered. Now it was time for the first ride. I was nervous because my bike has the straight bar across and I had never ridden a men’s bike before. Furthermore, after I unpacked it I felt that the frame was too high. Even when the saddle was in the lowest position I had a hard time touching the ground. Since...
