A Super Cheap Amusement Park? Heck Yes!

Date of travel: 11/23/2012 When I researched a larger town called Bareilly which we were going to approach shortly, I read about “Fun City”, an amusement park that had rave reviews online. I was very excited thinking that with an entrance ticket costing us 3 bucks we could go on the most awesome rides all afternoon. Well, turns out that all the reviews were from Indian kids who had never seen a park like Disneyland or Magic Mountain. There were only about 7 rides and they were pretty run-down and lame. Still, we had a lot of fun eating cheap ice cream and popcorn, and Eric found a funny...

Cycling in India

Dates of travel: 10/21- 10/26/2012 We had gotten a little taste of the bigger-is-stronger and honk-all-day driving attitude in Nepal, but India was even more extreme. Big buses and trucks are honking their way at high speeds through traffic and everyone needs to get out of the way. Nobody likes to stand still and it’s a constant shoveling and pushing. There are almost no traffic lights outside of the big cities, and the most confident (suicidal?) person gets to go first. After a while we learned quite well to go with the flow, but I am not denying that my heart was pumping at all times when...

Feeling Like Superstars

Dates of travel: 10/21/2012 – 10/26/2012 The next few days we made good progress towards Agra by cycling about 100 km each day. For every one of these km we also made one new “friend”. Everywhere we went we drew a lot of attention. People would ride next to us with their motorcycles or try their best to keep up with us if they were on bicycles. Most of them talked to Eric first and only once they asked for permission they would come up to me. It was interesting (and later very annoying) that they would all ask the exact same questions and mostly in the exact same order (“Where are...

A Long Day – Crossing the Border Into India

Date of travel: 10/21/2012 We had enjoyed our time in Nepal so much that we had a hard time leaving. On the day our visas expired we still had 140km to cycle to get to the border in Mahendranagar. We got up early and after a hearty breakfast we were on the road by 7:30am. Luckily everything was flat and the road was smooth so even though we took a long lunch break we arrived at 5:30pm, half an hour before the border was closing. On the Nepali side they immediately waved us through and then we got our first taste of India. The road immediately turned into bumpy dirt and was covered in trash....

India – The Complete Story

Dates of travel: 10/21/2012 – 11/10/2012 So far on this blog, our descriptions of countries, people and cultures have been primarily positive. However, my previous blog post about India was very negative and it certainly would only be fair to describe more in detail about our journey and experiences along the way that made us arrive at such critique. I have heard many times that either you hate India or you love it, and that there is not much in between. Despite the warnings we had received from other travelers coming from India who we met in Nepal, I was very much convinced that I...
