Delhi

Dates of travel: 10/28 – 10/30/2012 We had decided to spend only one week cycling in India, then store the bikes in Delhi and continue by public transportation for another five weeks. We felt that this way it would be easier to keep our sanity. Plus, it enabled us to see many more parts of the country that we wouldn’t be able to reach by bike because it would take months to get there. Hind side, our first week in India was much better than what was to come and if we had left at that time, we could have avoided a lot of negative experiences. When we tried to load our bikes on a bus...

Agra and the Taj Mahal

Dates of travel: 10/26 – 10/27/2012 Cycling into Agra was a mess of busy traffic. At one major intersection we saw how a motorcyclist hit a car. The driver got out of his vehicle, grabbed the motorcyclist and punched off his helmet before punching him in the face. My guess is that vehicle insurance isn’t very common in India. We found an inexpensive but clean hotel right outside the gates to the Taj Mahal where we stayed for two nights. Turns out that the next day was one of the only two days of the year when entrance to the Taj was free of charge. Lucky us! When we entered...

Dussehra Festival

Date of travel: 10/24/2012 I usually try my best to find out about festivals in the particular country we are at. Indian people like to party and there are so many festivals in different locations that I gave up on my research. It was a nice surprise when after a long day of cycling we walked out of our hotel to get some dinner and got to experience a really neat festival. The name is Dussehra and it celebrates the prevalence of good over evil. The festival was held in a large square with huge wooden statues set up in the middle. Thousands of people were gathered. Someone was counting down in...

A Super Cheap Amusement Park? Heck Yes!

Date of travel: 11/23/2012 When I researched a larger town called Bareilly which we were going to approach shortly, I read about “Fun City”, an amusement park that had rave reviews online. I was very excited thinking that with an entrance ticket costing us 3 bucks we could go on the most awesome rides all afternoon. Well, turns out that all the reviews were from Indian kids who had never seen a park like Disneyland or Magic Mountain. There were only about 7 rides and they were pretty run-down and lame. Still, we had a lot of fun eating cheap ice cream and popcorn, and Eric found a funny...

Cycling in India

Dates of travel: 10/21- 10/26/2012 We had gotten a little taste of the bigger-is-stronger and honk-all-day driving attitude in Nepal, but India was even more extreme. Big buses and trucks are honking their way at high speeds through traffic and everyone needs to get out of the way. Nobody likes to stand still and it’s a constant shoveling and pushing. There are almost no traffic lights outside of the big cities, and the most confident (suicidal?) person gets to go first. After a while we learned quite well to go with the flow, but I am not denying that my heart was pumping at all times when...
