Reunion with Teba and Luis & A Trip to Gibraltar

Twelve years have passed since I had last seen my friends Teba and Luis. Teba and I met while we were both Au Pairs in Kansas City where we had lots of wonderful times together. While in Kansas City she fell in love with Luis and later they got married and moved together to her hometown Marbella in Spain. I was so excited when I realized that we could plan our cycling route so that we could visit Teba and Luis. When we arrived in Teba’s town we got a bit lost while trying to find her apartment. Eric asked a friendly lady at a daycare center for directions and when he tried to get back out...

A Picturesque Spanish Mountain Town

Leaving Sevilla with our bikes was going to be a snap. Eric had researched the directions and picked the easiest route to get to our next destination Marbella (200km) without having to go over steep mountains. While we were standing at an intersection holding a map we were approached by a friendly German guy named Michael who offered us help. Eric eagerly explained to him the route he had picked but Michael said “Umm, you can’t go that way with your bikes…it’s a highway”. Then he recommended that we go the more direct route over the mountains because there is a beautiful hill-top...

Sevilla – Beautiful Architecture, a Bull Fight and a Whole Lot of Culture

Our next destination was Sevilla which would take us about three days of cycling to get to.  The ride there was moderately hilly and moderately wet. Our first Spanish campsite was well hidden and located down a mountainous side road just over the border. I tried telling Anja we could camp without the worry of rain because we were situated in a “rain shadow”, but she returned to me the typical look of amusement when I try being an amateur meteorologist. Contrary to my assessment, it did rain on us albeit very little. The next day we made a strong move for Sevilla and decided to stop for...

Évora & Monsaraz

After riding through the countryside for the last couple of days we were excited to be in a city again. Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage site with lots of historical monuments from different time periods. We decided to get a hotel room so that we could ditch the bikes and explore the city freely. After getting my iPhone stolen we had been extra careful about never leaving the bikes and our panniers without keeping an eye on them. We always take turns going into stores or exploring sights. Another advantage about getting a hotel room was that our backs were longing to sleep in a bed again...

Rolling Hills

The last two days were exactly what I imagined this trip to be like. We woke up at the campground in Sebutal and decided that it was time to do some laundry. There weren’t any washers and dryers, but we found some special sinks that were set up for washing clothes. They had rippled wash boards attached. Eric looked at them and announced “Wow, last time I saw one of those was in a history book”. Well, they actually work and with the help of our all-in-one soap-shampoo-toothpaste-detergent liquid we got our clothes clean and smelling minty-fresh. To dry them we just hung them off the ends...
